Nobody wants to have to call the plumber. It means that you are most likely going to be without something that you need such as a bathroom. It also means that you will have to pay for a repair which can be very costly. Often, it seems like repairs will need to be done on the weekend since that is when things tend to break down and then you are looking at getting a 24 hour plumber which means that you will be paying even more.
Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to ensure that your plumbing and septic system work properly. Luckily your plumbing is relatively maintenance-free, so you don’t really have to worry about it. But you can still run into problems. First off, don’t put anything down your drain or flush in the toilet that could cause a problem. Coffee grounds, wet-strength towels, facial tissues, cigarette buts, disposable diapers, and cooking fats are all thongs that you should never put down your drains or flush down the toilet.
It is a good idea to have your sewer line cleaned periodically and is a job that is often forgotten about. If you get your sewer line cleaned out regularly, you can avoid expensive cleanup costs as well as water damage. A maintenance plan is much less expensive than a costly repair bill. It is also a much smaller issue to have to deal with.
Sometimes, even with proper maintenance, you will have a sewer line backup. This could be caused form a root intrusion, or pipe scale buildup and you will most likely need to have a hydrojet drain cleaning. If this does not fix the issue, you may need to get a sewer line replacement.
Many older homes that were built before the 1950s you will probably have a clay sewer line. These types of sewer lines tend to have many joints where tree roots can more easily enter the line and cause clogs. They will require regular maintenance to keep them clear. They will need to be snaked by a plumber using root cutting equipment at least once every year. You can also use a chemical treatment afterward to help kill any remaining roost and to prevent re-growth. Fiber conduit sewer lines and cast-iron sewer lines tend to cause some issues as well and need to have regular maintenance done to keep them clog-free. It is a good idea to have a plumber identify the type of sewer lines that you have to find out what maintenance you should follow.
Maintenance is always the better option. It will help to keep things running smoothly so that you don’t have to go without your bathroom for a week and you will not have to pay for a giant repair bill. Just like with anything that you won, if you take care of it, you will have a much better functioning sewer line system, and you will be able to live headache-free.
